This time of the year is so busy, and I still don’t have up all the usual decorations that I normally get put up. Last night Connor spent the night and helped me set up this nativity. I’ve had this one for awhile, and can’t remember where it came from…but it was either a yard sale or thrift store. I like it because the pieces are so big! It has a few nicks and so on, but I’m still going to hang on to it! Hope all of you have a wonderful Christmas. I will start back with 2nd Time Around in Jan of 2012!

2nd Time Around: Facelift for 1950’s Furniture

This retro dresser from the 1950’s has been given a cheery coat of red and distressed. This piece is at the Flea Market where I have one of my booths. I’m especially interested in keeping note of it-the dresser was from the estate of my late mother in law! The vendor who bought it does a wonderful job with her painted furniture. This would make an awesome piece to use with a flat screen TV!

2nd Time Around: A Vintage Watercolor

I really am not a big fan of auctions, but this past Sat. I decided to go to one. There was not much else going on, and I planned to go to the preview and then leave if there wasn’t anything that was worth my time.

I ended up running into an old friend, and while we were catching up, this watercolor of parrots came up and I decided to jump in. I don’t have much confidence in myself at auctions, but I ended up with this work of art! I really love it, and had a couple of vendors who have had much more experience than I have take a look at it, and they both priced it much higher that I did! So, I marked it up! It may not sell, and if it doesn’t that’s okay! It may get a turn coming home with me in the spring! I think it would look great on my porch. I thought about painting the frame…what do you think? And what color??

2nd Time Around: Christmas Angels

As I have mentioned before, one of my favorite things to do while traveling to visit my student interns is to shop all the thrift stores along the routes. This semester, I have a student placed at a school in Reform, Ala. In the past couple of years, I have made contacts and become friends with Joan, who has a resale shop that is run for charity. When she knows that I’m coming, she will gather up some things that she thinks I might like.

Recently, I bought a whole box of these hand made ceramic angels! They came in really handy this past weekend. We had an open house at the flea market, and I used these pretty little angels to decorate my tree! I wish I knew who made them, and why they ended up in the thrift store! I love them…actually they are much prettier than the pictures show!

2nd Time Around: An Inherited Cabinet

Recently, my mother in law passed away. She had been at an assisted living apartment for several years, and had already sold many of her household items so there was not much furniture left to sell or divide.

My husband had always liked this cabinet, and wanted to make room for it. I had barrister bookcases in this corner, and have moved them somewhere else.

I wasn’t sure I would like the piece in our living room, but plan to use it as a curio cabinet or bookcase. As it turned out, I’m very pleased with how well the piece fit in our room. It is a perfect fit for this corner, and gives us lots of extra space. And, the cabinet is a sweet reminder of my mother in law!

This will be our first holiday season without her, and she will be missed! She died one day before her 90th birthday! We are thankful that she did not suffer for long, and was able to stay in her small assisted living apartment rather than go to the nursing home.

2nd Time Around: Chalkboards from Vintage Frames

Last week I made this chalkboard for one of my booths, and was glad to hear that it sold the same day I brought it in! This frame was an ugly gold color with a floral print. I painted the frame and used a stain to antique it and painted over the picture with chalkboard paint. Selling this inspired me to get busy today!

These will be added to my booths this week. We'll see if I get as lucky with these as I did with the first one!

I don’t normally go around dumpster diving, but couldn’t help my self this past weekend in New Orleans, La. After eating a wonderful brunch at Commanders Palace, my friends and I walked down the street to see this house.

Do you know who owns the house? Sandra Bullock! It didn’t appear that she was home, so we didn’t get invited in! But right by her driveway laying right on top of a big trash can were some great pieces of fabric!

This first piece is Brecon from England. I think my daughter may use this piece to cover some chairs in her dining room!

I’m not sure what this piece is called, but it is the largest piece. Don’t know what it will be used for yet…maybe some pillows…or I may cover a bulletin board with it! Anyway, we just couldn’t leave it laying there could we? LOL

2nd Time Around: New to me table and chairs

Have you ever bought a piece of furniture and within a short period of time realized that you didn’t really like it or that it didn’t fit your space? That is what happened to me with my kitchen table and chairs. So, that set (which was not too old) was taken to my flea market booth, and replaced with this oak table and four chairs. I bought the table from another vendor, and a friend from our church sold me these four chairs. This set takes up so much less space, and ‘fits’ the small space I have so much better! I really love the syle of these chairs!

I would love to paint the set, but am a little unsure about it! What do you think? Give me some ideas!!!

2nd Time Around: Shopping in Unexpected Places

One of my favorite things to do when I am traveling to visit my student teachers is to stop in all the little thrift stores and resell shops along the route. I have two student teachers this semester that are in the Reform, Ala. area, and I have had a wonderful time discovering these tiny hidden places! There are actually five places along the route from my home in Meridian that sell the kind of treasures I look for. Most of them look pretty junky when you first walk in, but I’ve gotten good at scouting the area pretty quickly and gathering up the things I’m interested in.

Recently I found this mirror at one of the shops. When I asked the price I was expecting a larger amount than $3, but that is what she sold it to me for! I bought lots of costume jewelry from her too for a total of around $7.00. I was tempted to keep this one for my porch. But, I put this in one of my booths, and it sold within a matter of days.

I will be headed back up to Reform next week, and am hoping to find more treasures! I love finding things for my booths and sometimes for myself in unexpected places!

2nd Time Around: Bird Cage

Last week I decided to stop by a church rummage sale before I set out to visit one of my student teachers. When I got there a line began to form, and I new that I would have to be quick because all the good stuff would go fast. As soon as I walked in the door, I saw a this bird cage and two iron plant stands that were near each other. I managed to reach the bird cage before another lady, and she managed to reach the iron plant stands before me! We both just laughed about it. She happens to buy for a small resell store, and I knew I could buy the plant stands from her for a good price, but was not able to get to her store before they were sold.

But I do love this birdcage….it is different, and for now it is in one of my booths!

Last week my son and I went to Columbus, Ms. to an estate sale that we found on estatesales.net.

We were a little disappointed because all the prices were really high! The man in charge said that the merchandise was purchased from three different New York estates. I could have walked out empty handed, but did find this made in Italy compote on the 75% off table. I know it is not worth much, but I love Italian pottery!

Our trip was not in vain, I found a vintage music box at a thrift store, and several great pieces of vintage jewelry from a vendor at one of the antique malls. And, I enjoyed seeing the sites of Columbus! Lots of great old homes there!

I found this adorable shelf this week at the Antique Mall in Meridian. It was bought by the owner from an old store and estate that had been shut up for over 25 years! They said that the shelf was hand made from an old fence. For now I’m enjoying it on my screened porch. Later, I may use it as display at one of my booths!

2nd Time Around: Estate Sale Wicker for the Front Porch!

Last weekend I went to an estate sale held by a lady that has a booth at one of the flea markets I’m associated with. She was having a sale on her mother’s estate, and had these fabulous wicker chairs and rockers. I bought all four for a great price! They are in mint condition….but they are grayish in color. I am going to spray paint them either white or possibly black so they will blend in better on the front porch. Then I plan to look for fabric and have the cushions recovered. We have a long narrow front porch, and they fit perfectly!

We did have wood rockers on the front porch, and sold them over a year ago, and I’ve been on the lookout for porch furniture since then. Hopefully this new purchase will inspire me to fix up the porch so we can enjoy our beautiful lake view!

2nd Time Around: Pink Nellie-new Vintage Shop in Town!

I am always looking for new places to shop for vintage and antique items, and we have a great new place in Meridian called Pink Nellie! Actually, I met Linda (her real name) at the 45 Flea Market and Antiques over a year ago where she had a booth when she first moved to Meridian. She has been doing this all her life and inherited her love of old things from her mother, Nellie. Linda loves pink so the logical name for her new shop was “Pink Nellie!”

Recently a house became available on 23rd avenue in Meridian right behind Ed Chaney Tires and one block off 22nd Avenue…and you guessed it the house was pink! Linda had been considering her own shop for a while and this seemed to be the perfect time and place.

So, with the help of her husband they moved her massive inventory to the new shop- Pink Nellie!

I visited there recently with my friend Karen and took some pictures to show you how adorable her shop is!

With all my shopping I do for my booths, and the time I spend at the booths, every now and then I find something I just have to have for myself!

This past week was one of those weeks! I found this great wicker table that is almost a perfect match to my wicker sofa! It was a great price too…so I bought it home with me!

I have it in place and put a couple of things on it for the photo…now it has to be decorated. Hope it will inspire me to spend more time on my screened porch! I really love it there! :)

We had very special visitors last week at the 45 Flea Market and Antiques in Meridian. Eddie Ross and Jaithan Kochlar who write a column for Southern Living and Woman’s Day on Flea Market finds visited us.

I have been reading Eddie Ross’s blog for several years, and immediately knew who they were! I felt like I was meeting a celebrity! Eddie and Jaithan shopped the flea market for items for the article. I don’t know if they will use it, but the gold jewelry box in his hand was picked for a makeover. It was a local estate purchase.

They also purchased this Mississippi basket that I had redone long ago and had in a corner of my booth for Connor. He has his own shelves and helped me with my booth last summer. They plan to remake this with a Mississippi map…don’t know why I didn’t think of that!

2nd Time Around: Cabinet from the Sixties

It is hand painted from the sixties, and looks great with books, collectibles, or whatever you want! It came from a New Orleans estate sale.

2nd Time Around: Music Boxes

Lately I’ve been running across music boxes while out shopping for my booths and for my Etsy store. I seem to be attracted to them, and may keep some of them and start a collection!

Here are some of my favorites. This first one is Red Riding Hood and the wolf. It plays a delightful version of “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf”. As a former teacher I couldn’t resisit it! This one came from a Tuscaloosa, Al estate sale.

The second one is a nativity and plays a crystal clear version of silent night. It is made in Italy and may be Fontanni. It came from an estate sale in York, Ala.

This last one from a Meridian estate sale features a carousel with horses that move up and down. This one has special meaning to my grandkids because we have a historic carousel in Meridian that we visit occasionally with them. I’m not sure of the tune. It is made by the San Francisco Music Company.

I just returned from a trip to Lookout Mountain with some of my teacher friends. While there, some of us rode over to Scottsboro, Al. to Unclaimed Baggage. Didn’t find any bargains there! The prices were almost as much as retail, and much of the merchandise was new!

On the way back we did find an antique/consignment shop that provided lots of inspiration! Although the prices were high, the antiques and painted furniture was beautiful like the chest in this picture!

I would love to try out something like this and just see how well it would sell here!

2nd Time Around: Quick Paint Job-Quick Sale!

This library table was a bargain I found at the same house that had the mirror I bought a couple of weeks ago that I blogged about. It was already painted white, but had been decoupaged with family photos on the top. I used my sander and a paint thinner to remove all the residue from the decoupage. I gave it a quick coat of paint, and distressed the edges with my sander. Then instead of using polyurethane, I finished the piece with paste wax-so easy to do, and I really loved the results!

This piece sold within a week – and provided the motivation needed to get busy painting some more!

It’s just that it is so hot here!

Last week was one of those weeks where there were not too many sales to go to! But I got up and went to two or three anyway. I only bought one thing which is unusual for me! I had been wanting to get an over the door rack for my pantry to hold small items and free up some drawer space. I thought I would have to order it online, and couldn’t believe my luck when I found this one for $2.00! It is perfect for storing zip lock bags, plastic wrap etc!

Just goes to show you that you really never know what you’ll find!

You really never know what you will find at a garage sale or an estate sale! This past weekend, I got up kinda late and didn’t get my usual early start because there weren’t many sales. I went to one sale on Friday late in the morning and bought a library table and pair of earrings. The sale had a mirror that I really loved, but it was so large I didn’t know if I could use it or if I could sell it in one of my booths.

My bathroom wall above the garden tub has been needing something for a while:

So, when I went back to pick up the table, I made an offer on the mirror, and couldn’t believe it when she let me have it for $20! So….it is leaned up against the wall now, but will soon be hanging over the garden tub!

Sometimes I need a break from all the bargain shopping I do for my Etsy store and my booths. This weekend I took one…but not out of choice. I woke up Saturday thinking I would go to a few sales, but went straight back to bed with a stomach virus! I had picked Cooper up from the baby sitter early one day because he was sick, and seems that I got attacked by the same bug! But, I really didn’t need to buy anything anyway!

So, I don’t have any of my own things to share, but would like to share this chiffarobe that one of the vendors redid as a display case. My beautician offered this piece to me, but it had doors with peeling veneer, and I told her that I would sell it for her. She got rid of the old doors, and painted the inside green with red outside! I think it looks great, and offered to buy it for display! Looks great in her booth displaying vintage linens!

It’s funny how one person can see the potential in something that others miss!

Recently I purchased several estate pieces from a young lady that had taken care of her aunt. Among the things I bought was this Victorian ewer. Before this, I had not heard of a ewer before, and still don’t know much about them.

The piece is metal, and I’m wondering if it could be bronze! It does not appear to have an opening….so that is very intriguing. If any of you reading this have any information about this piece or a similar piece, please share it with me!

2nd Time Around: Antique Alley Porch Finds

This past weekend, I shopped the US Highway 11 Antique Alley. This event was started several years ago in an effort to get people to drive the older highways and see more of rural America! Highway 11 runs about a mile from my house, and there are lots of booths set up in spots along the highway. I met so many nice people-from Mobile, Ala. to Tennessee that either had set up a booth or were out shopping. I’ve considered setting up a booth, but think that it is much more fun to actually shop! LOL

I lost count of the stuff I bought for my booths, but decided to keep this window shelf and a couple of accessories for my porch.

This old window frame had been repurposed into a shelf by adding a board and two spindles! I think this is a great way to use those old windows! The ceiling tin is one I’ve had awhile…it came out of an old building in my town.

I fell in love with this iron finial with a bird perched on top! It was only $4.00!

This cute teapot watering can is hand painted from Italy! It was only $1.00! I love anything that is hand painted and from any country other than China!

I also bought a bench, a baker’s rack, chest with shelves to paint…and LOTS of vintage jewelry! Some was cheap and other pieces I paid more for, but overall the prices are great if you consider the total!

2nd Time Around: Estate Sales in the French Quarter in NOLA

On a recent trip to Houma LA, we stopped by two estate sales in the French Quarter at New Orleans. Part of the fun of going to an estate sale in the FQ is getting a peek at these apartments! The first one we went to was across from Jackson Square. It was the estate of an older gentlemen who lived alone. We climbed this flight of stairs to get to the sale. While there, I regret that we didn’t make more pictures! We did find out that the rent for his apartment was $2,000 per month, and that there is a 10 year waiting list!

This was the second day of the sale, so most of the stuff was gone, but I did pick up a few items that caught my eye.

Can any of you help me identify this piece? I really like it, but don’t know exactly what it is for. He had it in his kitchen and stored coffee filters, etc. in the different sections. It is glass, and the 4sections are separated by wooden dividers similar to a cheese server. I wonder if plants would survive in the sections…kinda like a terrarium?

I also picked up this shoe horn which may be Bakelite, and has a bamboo handle. It still has the original tag that says ‘made in England.’

Any finally, I love this vintage cruet….for oil and vinegar I assume. I think the shape of it is interesting!

After this sale, we walked several blocks to another sale on Royal Street. If I had been thinking of blogging, I would have had some great picture taking opportunities along the way. I bought some garden tools and a bread basket at this sale…nothing very unusual.

I have always been fascinated with the French Quarter and the people that have lived there a long time. Both of these estates were from people who had lived there for many years. Sales like these will soon be a thing of the past as I can’t see very many older people making the French Quarter their home!

2nd Time Around: Opinions Needed!

Sometimes I buy things that end up being more trouble than they are worth. I’m afraid this chair may be one of those things! A fellow vendor was closing her booth, and I got caught up in the ‘get a bargain’ mode and bought this chair really cheap!

I don’t have anything against the Saints, in fact I love them and was thrilled when they won the Super Bowl. But I think this chair needs a make over! So, I’m asking for your help. What color do you think I should paint it? I already have white and black spray paint, and I know those are neutral colors that many people like. So, should I paint it black or white? Or a bright retro color like lime green? Or leave it as it is and sell it CHEAP?

Help me out….I’m having a hard time making a decision! LOL Or maybe I’m just lazy! So, leave me a comment…one word will do. What color would ‘speak’ to you if you had this chair?

2nd Time Around: Bargains That Make Me Smile

I’m at the stage in life where I need to ‘downsize’ rather than buying more stuff. Problem is I love shopping for bargains, and I can’t stop buying for my booths! It seems that I sell small items alot more than bigger ones, and small items add up! Here are a few of my favorite smalls picked up recently at yard sales or estate sales!

I got this little flower cart really cheap at a neighborhood yard sale. It was one of those things that got pushed to the back burner and I finally got around to giving it a face lift with spray paint. Sorry there are no before pictures but picture it gold! LOL This pic was made before Easter…guess I’ll have to pack the bunnies up!

I found this cute bird house at an estate sale in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I have shopped there quite a bit this semester since I have 5 student teachers there! I’m also lucky enough to have a friend that lives there, so I spend the night with her. This last time what started out being a one night stay turned into three! She asked me to stay an extra night since there were several estate sales listed, so I did. When it was time to go home on Friday a line of storms which included tornados came through right when I started to leave and I ended up staying a third night!

I’ve had this cute little plaque so long I can’t remember where I got it! And it is priced CHEAP! Guess the right buyer hasn’t come along yet!

And one of my personal favorites-this cute vintage owl planter filled with Swedish Ivy! I bought this at a store called Ann’s Tiques. I always try to stop in there while in Tuscaloosa. She is a retired teacher and buys stuff for her store at garage sales, estate sales, etc. and has great prices! This little guy makes me smile! She planted it with the Swedish Ivy and told me how to root it, so I may try planting some of my vintage containers with it and see if they’ll sell!

2nd Time Around: Fence from the Auction

I really am not that fond of auctions! I would rather go to a garage sale or estate sale any day! However, there have been a series of auctions near my home that I’ve attended. An old antique store owner died a couple of years ago, and the contents of his home and store are being auctioned off. There have been three so far, and will probably be at least 3 more!

Mr. Booker inherited the antique business from his mother, so much of the merchandise is very old! The auctioneer and his staff have said that many of the items had ‘not for sale’ signs on them. The store itself had several outbuildings that had not been used in years….and all were full of antiques.

Recently the third auction was held, and I got caught up in the moment! I had the ‘winning’ bid on this old iron fencing! Actually, the bid was times 4 as there was 4 pieces of the fence. I kept the one in the photos below, sold one to my daughter, and put two in the porch area of the Antique Mall! If the right buyer comes along, the two pieces will pay for the ones that I’m keeping and give me a little profit!

When I took these by the antique mall, the owner believed that they were parts of a old cemetery fence. I have no idea how Mr. Booker acquired them, but I have a receipt showing that their mine now! LOL

Right now this section is lining my front flower bed, but may eventually be moved to the back! Either way, I love it and it reminds me of all the shopping trips to Booker’s Antiques in Whynot, Ms.

2nd Time Around: Patio furniture

Last week I wrote about those leather chairs that sold the same day I brought them in. This week, I started out in a neighborhood that I normally don’t go to first, and got lucky again! I bought this vintage patio furniture for a great price! It is in great condition except for the rust spots on the coffee table and a few other small places.

I took it to the Antique Mall where I started out and put it in the outdoor area. I really didn’t have room for it in my booths, so this is a great solution! The owner gets a little higher percentage of the sale, and is always glad to get outdoor pieces since shoppers seem to be looking for furniture like this to fix up.

There were at least two calls about the set the same day I took it in, so I’m confident it will sell soon! If not, I may go get it and paint it! Of course if I do that, the price will have to go up too!

It may end up black to match my shutters on my front porch!

2nd Time Around: Getting Lucky at the Sales!

Most of the time it takes me the first 10 days of the month to sell enough to pay my rent in my booths at the Antique Mall and Flea Markets. Not this month! This past Saturday I went garage selling with Kelli, and ran across these great leather chairs at a fantastic price! Since we were in her large SUV, we had room for them so we loaded them and took them straight to my largest booth. The same day, I had an offer on them, and they were picked up the next day! So, by the third day of the month I made my rent! I really like the chairs, but they just don’t go with my house! Its funny how some things sell so quickly and other things have to wait for that right buyer! The lace screen in the background is one of those items! I have had it almost 6 months, and I’m wondering if it will ever sell! I knew the leather chairs were a great purchase, but had no idea they would sell that quickly!

Wish I could lucky like this at least once a month! LOL

2nd Time Around: An experiment with vintage glass bird feeders!

I love garden art and bird feeders! After seeing this idea in a magazine, I have been buying vintage dishes to make bird feeders. This week, I made several of them to see if they would sell in one of my booths. I painted this planter sage green, and displayed them with rebar threaded through a wire top box.

We are having our grand opening on Thursday night for this new booth I’m doing with my daughter Kelli. It was kind of a last minute thing…the booth opened up and was in a great location, so we decided to take it. You may be wondering what we will have in the booth! Right now it is a mixture of stuff I gathered up from home, my other booths, and Kelli’s home! We hope to be able to paint some furniture, make wreaths, etc!

Don’t know how well the bird feeders will sell, but they have made a cute display for the grand opening! And by the way, the cute hot pink sconces were painted and decorated by Kelli! She had a great talent for making floral arrangements.

This one is made from a striped cup and saucer.

This one is a lavender flowered bowl and a lavender bottle.

And my favorite….a pink depression glass dish and a gold trimmed saucer.

They may end up at my house or at the home of some of my relatives! LOL We’ll see!These may not sell, but were so easy to make. They have a vase glued to the bottom which makes them very easy to slip off the rebar and clean.

2nd Time Around: New to Me Purse!

I have always been one to get one purse that I really like and carry it until it falls apart! My daughter on the other hand, changes purses almost daily! She and Vikki, Connor and Cooper’s other grandmother, both love purses have put in a booth at the new mini mall where I have my jewelry. When Kelli put this purse in the booth after using it only once or twice, I had to have it!

It was my first purchase from their booth-Razzle Dazzle! I don’t know if I’ll ever love purses as much as they do or change as often as they do, but I’m really enjoying carrying my new to me purse!

2nd Time Around: Shopping my Stash!

One of my favorite things to do it shop for my booths at the antique mall and the flea market. I’ve been doing this for over a year, and it has been lots of fun! It has made my retirement easy-I choose my own hours and am my own boss! And I am doing something I enjoy.

However, I like shopping for the items more than I do cleaning them up and pricing them. Sometimes just to get the car cleaned out, I stash some of the ‘finds’ on shelves in the garage or a box in our bonus room and forget I have them!

Recently, I’ve been trying to clean out the stash in the garage and the bonus room, and found some things that I took today to add to my booths.

This vintage spoon rack came from an estate sale, and I’ve had it so long I forgot how much I paid for it! I saw one in another booth at a different mall that was used as a planter, so I cleaned this one up and put some faux grapes in the copper container. We’ll see if it sells….I think my original plan was to paint this piece-and that may be what I will end up doing! I can see it in an ivory shade with a shabby chic look!

I don’t know why these brass owls never made it to one of the booths-they just fell between the cracks so to speak! The lady that runs the mall said owls were big sellers-so we’ll see!

These pair of owl plaques were from the seventies and made by Homco. My son took them to New Orleans and put them in his booth, but brought them back last week since they had not sold. I marked them down in price-hopefully an ‘owl’ collector will spot them soon!

Found these little ceramic bunnies in a box in the bonus room. I wouldn’t remember how much I paid for them except the price was still on them! I think I bought them last year after Easter, and was waiting til the right time to bring them out! Since Easter is close by maybe they will go home with someone this year! I love their sweet faces!

So, do any of you horde stuff? I’m trying to break my habit of doing this and plan to finish getting all those unpriced and undone projects in one of the booths!

2nd Time Around: Helping Give an Estate Sale

If you have been following my blog you might have noticed that I missed last week posting the 2nd Time Around event that I have been doing for awhile. I apologize if this was an inconvenience to anyone, but I simply was exhausted from helping with an estate sale, and just didn’t get around to it. I intended to contact those that emailed me, but later became sick with a stomach virus! So, hopefully you will forgive me, and I’ll try to do better. And I appreciate those of you who emailed me or left a comment wondering if everything was okay.

Helping with the estate sale was lots of work, but it was also fun! The house had been empty and neglected for awhile, and those in charge of the estate were not sure there was enough to hold a sale. My son went over and previewed the contents and thought that there would be enough to make it worthwhile to have an estate sale. He did really well with it, and in fact made around $500 more in sales than he had projected based on the prices of the merchandise.

Cleaning up and making the contents appear attractive proved to be challenging, but there were some great buys had by all. It was fun for me to watch the people and notice what all they bought.

Some of the highlights of the sale that I photographed include this dresser. The lady that bought it plans to paint it white. She later came back and bought the matching bed.

An antique dealer from one of the malls that I am associated with didn’t bat an eye at paying $45 for this vase! And it proved to be a great investment for him-it was sold from his booth this weekend!

This cupboard from the seventies was also a great buy at $200! The original price on this piece 35-40 years ago was over $2,000! The lady that bought it plans to paint it black for her son’s home. The dishes are an English Ironstone and also sold early in the day.

This little table is one I would love to have bought. I was hoping no one else would buy it so I could. It sold for $45 dollars to another lady with an antique booth.

This pretty dresser and the chest below were part of a matching bedroom suit, but bought by different people.

This pretty frame was also a great buy at $20!

You may be wondering what I bought…. some great pieces of vintage jewelry, 4 chairs that will need to be redone, and some other miscellaneous items. There were lots of great items I didn’t get pictures of including outside items like slabs of marble that one lady dug up and bought for a walkway, an old gate that a dealer has already painted and put in her booth, some really old beautiful perfume bottles, quilts, a box of linens that had been packed up, a chenille bedspread still in the original packaging and many more items. There was one man that bought an old cedar chest that was falling apart! He was so happy to have gotten a bargain and a project to work on, and the owners were thrilled to have the old chest gone!

It was fun, but pretty exhausting! I have come to the conclusion that it is more fun to attend an estate sale than to have one. LOL

2nd Time Around: Birds and Spring!

One of my favorite things at the flea market are bird related items! I love these vintage bird prints with an updated frame. I have two very similar that I have been needing to make a decision about! I think I may keep them for the guest bedroom. I bought them really cheap at an estate sale, and the young man conducting the sale for his grandmother got very emotional as he told me how much she loved her bird prints! I love them too!

Sometimes in my hurry to buy things for my booth, I overlook flaws that I should have noticed! If you look carefully at this little bird flower pot you will notice that the tail is broken from one of the birds. Actually this pot has been in my booth awhile, and I had been surprised that no one bought it. Then one day the lady that runs it called me and told me someone was interested in this pot but wanted to know if I would reduce the price because one of the feathers was broken! Of course I said yes! Maybe the new owner has repaired it!

I’m ready for spring, and enjoy browsing the antique mall and the flea market for flower pots! I had much rather buy a one of a kind than a mass produced one at Walmart or somewhere!

2nd Time Around: Another Temptation!

Several months ago, I wrote about my new hall tree. Click here to see that post. I have a ‘thing’ for hall trees! The one in the previous post was my second one. I’m still trying to sell the first one at one of my booths.

Now, I’ve found another one I like! This one is very unusual…guess that’s why I love it! It has an old oak door with beveled glass attached to the bottom of an old hall tree! And behind the glass is a mirror. The only thing missing is some hooks which would be an easy fix!

I have been tempted with this one (sorry the picture is not perfect, but this lady is still working on her booth) I could always sell the one I have now at one of my booths! Don’t know what I’ll decide to do-maybe it will sell before I make up my mind! That would solve my problem!

2nd Time Around: Higher End Antiques

Although painted furniture seems to be the rage, there are still wood pieces that I am attracted to. At the newest place where I have the jewelry booth I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, there are some ‘high’ end antiques that are in the booths there.

I don’t have space for these pieces, but love both of them. I have a similar tea cart at one of my antique booths for a whole lot less than the asking price for this one. I’m interested in seeing if and when it sells!

And I love this cabinet with the beveled glass doors. I don’t know enough about all the old furniture styles and wood, but I wonder if it is Victorian and maybe mahogany. If anyone can give me information about it, please do! I have a good friend who thought about purchasing it for her newly remodeled living room, but the price of $1500 made her change her mind!

So, do you like either of these? The painted furniture craze has not hit this venue, but I’m thinking it will soon. Several more vendors are on the way, and customers are beginning to stop by and actually buy some things! I’ve already sold enough jewelry to pay my rent, which is not too bad for only 7 days into the month!

2nd Time Around: Matching the Paint to the Piece!

Sorry this post is late getting up, but sometimes life gets in the way!

This week I’m featuring two painted pieces at the Flea Market. I do the Facebook page for them, and try to feature items that will entice customers to come out and look at all the great merchandise we have. The little shabby desk sold very quickly, and the red chiffarobe had several comments. I haven’t painted anything this color yet, but my daughter wants a desk I bought to paint, and wants it red! So, I’m hoping she will see this and let me know if it is anywhere close to the color she wants! I think the owners of these pieces did a great job on choosing colors that ‘go’ with the furniture!

2nd Time Around: Exciting new use for some of the junk I’ve been hoarding!

Last January I started my second booth at an area Flea Market and Antique shop. Around March, another vendor asked me if I was interested in buying her entire lot of vintage jewelry. I knew absolutely nothing about vintage jewelry at the time, but she gave me a crash course and I decided to buy it-locked case and all for $100. I immediately sold the locked case for $50 because I planned on selling the jewelry online in my Etsy shop.

Since that time, I can not stop buying vintage jewelry! I look for it everywhere----other flea markets, garage sales, thrift stores and Ebay! Later I added some jewelry to my first antique booth, then the second, and most recently this week---a new booth in a new mini mall! My friend Karen is doing this one with me and we have decided to sell both vintage and new jewelry.

The booth is still a work in progress, but here are some pictures of it-all decorated with 2nd Time Around stuff!

First, the pink glass pane door ended up serving as the inspiration. We really didn’t have much of a plan when we decided to do this, but we wanted to try to use things we already had. I did purchase this door from the lady that owns the antique mall where I have my first booth for $12! I had a rusty gate in my booth that I went to get, saw the door, and decided to use it instead. And this door has worked out much better! The lace curtains were purchased on a trip this past week to Tuscaloosa after I visited my student teachers. I always try to find a little time to shop the ‘junk’ stores while working and bought enough to line the 5 by 10 foot booth all the way around-all for $4.00!

And I might add, bought some great jewelry really cheap!

The pink shuttered door came out of my sisters house. It had laid in her basement for years-until I started all this. The rug was a thrift store purchase that I pulled from my back porch, the animal print bulletin board was either a garage sale of thrift store purchase-been hoarding it so long I can’t remember- and the cute little bear was a reject of Connor or Cooper!

The little mink coat is doll size, and something I’ve been hanging onto for awhile. It was part of the stock of an old drugstore in our hometown that carried a line of dolls and doll cloths. It is a little too tight for the bear, so we just draped it over her lap!

The big purchase was this huge lighted showcase bought from a vendor at antique mall number 2! We paid him $150 for it, and then had to pay $40 to have it moved. We’ve already had some interest in it-but it’s not for sale at this time.

The pink valance was another thrift store find that we jerked down from booth number 2! It looks much better here! The table was a junk store find, and the black fabric as another thrift store find that I’ve hung on too. The vintage mirrors were garage sale or thrift store finds. I have bought some of them to sell on Etsy, but they are much more useful in the jewelry booth! The little wicker table was another thing I’ve hung onto…purchased at the Antique Alley sale last May!

And finally for something new….here’s a picture of one of the new jewelry pieces!

The jewelry is a little sparse even though Karen and I have plenty more jewelry to price! (I’ve been hoarding that too!)

So, this is one time that the stuff I’ve been hoarding had come in handy!

2nd Time Around: Vintage Owls

Do any of you remember when owls were popular? Maybe the seventies and eighties? Well, it seems that owls have made a comeback. Any time I buy something for my booth that has an owl theme, it usually sells pretty quickly. Today I went by the flea market, and an owl pendant necklace that I just put out had sold!

These brass owl bookends were photographed to go on the Facebook page for the Flea Market. Later I decided to go back and purchase them for my daughter. She has decided to collect owls, and acquired quite a few. They were a great buy at only 5 bucks!

Guess this proves that if you keep something long enough, it will finally come back in style!

2nd Time Around: Hand Painted Basket from Portugal

This time of the year it’s really hard to find much at yard sales, etc. It is too cold for most people to have one, and if they did it would be too cold to get up early and go! So, I try to go to the area thrift stores at least once a week to see if any treasures can be found!

I’m usually looking for items for my flea market booth, or vintage jewelry, but occasionally I find something I like to hang on to. This little hand painted porcelain basket from Portugal was one of those items! It is so cute, and the perfect color for my sage green bathroom. And I am always attracted to items made somewhere besides China!

I took several pictures because I thought I would put it in my Etsy shop, but since then, I’ve decided to keep it. It is perfect for those small things like nail clippers, etc. that are always needed quickly and usually get lost in a drawer! Who knows…later it may end up in one of the booths, or in my Etsy shop, but for now it has a home in the bathroom!

Here’s another old piece given a great facelift with sage green paint. This was done by one of the talented vendors at one of the antique malls where I have a booth. She also updated the frames around old prints with the same color! I have a paler shade of this color that I bought from the ‘Oops paint’ section at Walmart-which by the way happens to be a great place to buy paint cheap! I haven’t decided what I’ll paint with it yet….but it will be something small!

2nd Time Around: Vintage Santa

This week I want to share with you a vintage Santa that my son found at an estate sale in New Orleans, La. At first I didn’t like it at all, but the more I looked at it I began to see the potential in it. It is glass, and a bronze like color. We decided to put it in one of the booths…it is kinda late to be adding Christmas décor, but maybe someone passing through will spot it and see the potential in this piece. 2nd Time Around: A Little Jacket Saves the Day!

This week’s post will be a little different! I visited my grandkids on Sunday afternoon, and when I got ready to leave Cooper wanted to come home with me. I haven’t had a chance to have him as much by himself like I did Connor because he usually wants to come too! But since it was a school night, he had to let Cooper come by himself.

It was bitter cold on Monday, and Kelli had not sent Cooper a coat. He wanted to go eat and play at the mall, and my husband just happened to remember that we had this little jacket that belonged to Connor! Cooper was so proud of it since it belonged to ‘brudder’ as he calls him! He wouldn’t take it off all day! So, this little 2nd Time Around jacket saved the day for us!

I’m always attracted to vintage cross stitch pictures when shopping estate sales, garage sales, etc. This one in this photo was really cheap…and even though I don’t have a chicken theme in my home, I bought it for one of my antique booths. I think I may actually have the book with the directions for this piece somewhere! I loved doing cross stitch at one time, and hopefully these vintage cross stitch pictures will one day be appreciated again! This one is still at the antique mall among other ‘chicken’ related items waiting for just the right person to come along! One thing I’ve learned through all this is that you never know what someone else will like, and just when you’ve about given up on something it sells, so even though it hasn’t sold yet, I still have hope that it will!

2nd Time Around: Thanksgiving

Hope all of you will have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We celebrated early with my family at my aunts house, and will have a simple Thanksgiving at home with a few family members on Thursday. I went by my booth at the Flea Market and Antiques today and was going to get the turkey platter you see in this photo to bring home and use this year. But when I got there it had sold! No complaints….I have plenty of more serving dishes, and I made a great profit on it. LOL

The turkey pillow was one of a pair, so one of them has sold. I wonder if anyone will buy the salt and pepper shakers or the wooden turkey? Guess I’ll find out after Thanksgiving!

I have been selling lots of serving type dishes this time of the year! Do any of you have new serving dishes? Hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

2nd Time Around: New to Me Shelf

I purchased this shelf from a vendor that has a booth near me at the Flea Market. She bought it on the Longest Yard Sale back in August. She let me bring it home to see if it would fit above my range in the kitchen, but it didn’t. I liked it too much to take it back to her, so now it’s in the dining room. Not really sure what I’ll end up doing with it, and it may stay right there, but either way I really like it!

2nd Time Around: New Paint for a Plain China Cabinet

This cabinet once belonged to a friends mother, and after she passed away was unwanted by the family members. It was an ugly French Provincial style from the sixties or seventies, and was nothing to look at.

The china cabinet has been given a new lease on life with a coat of black paint, and unique hardware made of vintage jewelry and jute! The cabinet is in the home my friend’s daughter, and is a beautiful focal point in their family room. I love how the black paint makes her bright pieces of pottery pop!

2nd Time Around: Mantel Mirror

Thought I would share with all of you an early Christmas present I bought my daughter at the antique mall where I have a booth. This is part of an old mantel that has been painted and distressed. It looks great above her mantel against the stone fireplace. She decorated it for fall Saturday when we put it up there, but soon it will be ready to decorate for Christmas! Maybe I’ll feature it again then. Later, it will need to have a wire across the back so it can be hung, and not have to lean against the wall, but we were anxious to get it in place!

Recently we traveled to Bay St. Louis Mississippi for Cruising the coast. I didn’t take as many pictures as normal, but here are a couple of cars that are on their ‘2nd Time Around"!

Not only did we see lots of old cars, we also saw some great entertainment including the Temptation Review-(only one of the original members is still performing.)

2nd Time Around: Lamps with Prisms

At the same estate sale where my son purchased the bookcase I wrote about 2 weeks ago, I found this lamps. They have etched glass shades, and prisms.

I bought them at a great price, and planned to resale them in one of my booths. But when I got home, I noticed a hairline crack in one of the shades! So for now, I’m enjoying them on my antique sideboard! Maybe one day I’ll run across another shade and decide to part with them, but more than likely I won’t!

Don’t know if you can tell which one it is…but it is in the first picture. I thought I had looked them over really well, so I’m wondering if the crack happened after they were packed up. Who knows? But I am going to have to be more careful!

2nd Time Around: Pictures from a Downsizing Sale

Sometimes I buy something for my booths that I get home and decide to keep. That is what happened with these two pictures that I found recently at a ‘downsizing’ sale. There seems to be quite a few of these lately by the way!

The picture frame was banged up a little, and I need to get the right paint to fix them, but for now I touched them up with a paint pen. They are perfect for the spot right next to my china cabinet.

2nd Time Around: Estate Sale Bookcase

Recently my son found this oak bookcase for a great price at an estate sale. He wanted to put it in one of his booths to make a quick sale, but I talked him in to selling it to me! The price was right….and I didn’t have to go to the hassle of getting it here…it was already here!

The piece is oak, which many people don’t really care for anymore. But I love it- It is perfect for books, collectables, and pictures. And it is a perfect fit at for the spot at the end of the sofa!

I don’t know if you can tell from the photos-but the old glass is wavy and very pretty! And I love the way it reflects light from the room especially at night!

I was in a hurry to get it filled-it needs tweaking, but for now it will do!

2nd Time Around: New to me rug!

Last week I didn’t get to go to too many sales because Connor spent the night with me and he had an early soccer game. We were trying our best to get there on time, so we ended up with a few extra minutes and were able to stop by a garage sale.

I found this rug for my hall at a sale on the way to the game. It needs cleaning, and I’ll have that done soon, but I needed something in our hallway. I love the soft colors in this piece.

So, you never know what you’ll find! I thought all the bargains would have been snatched up by the early morning shoppers, but not this rug!

2nd Time Around: Antique Store Auction

For years one of the best places to shop for antiques was this store in Whynot, Mississippi. Mr. Booker owned this shop which included this building and several others.

I may have written about this experience before, so if you’ve heard this just skip over this part. When my daughter moved into her first home after getting married, she and I loved shopping for bargain antiques for her home. One day we were at Booker’s Antiques, and my daughter and son had crossed the road and were telling me to ‘hurry up’ as I came out the door. I was carrying Connor, and looked down, and a huge black snake slithered right in front of my foot!

From that point on, I would only go out there in cold weather! I still would buy things occasionally, but would always tell Mr. Booker about my snake sighting, and have him check drawers etc. to make sure there were not any snakes hibernating in the piece! He would laugh and say his pet snakes kept the place free of rats and mice!

As years went by, we would shop there less frequently, and Mr. Booker was often not there when we would go. I would still see him at estate sales and sometimes garage sales, but he always said to call first…he didn’t keep the shop open very much.

A couple of years ago, Mr. Booker passed away, and much of his finer antique pieces that were in his home were shipped to New Orleans to be auctioned off. I thought about going to the auction just for the fun of it, but did not go.

Recently, an auction was held near his store to auction the contents of his store. When we drove up, we saw car tags from many states and lots of antique dealers, so that was a pretty sure sign that bargains would be hard to come by.

I had my camera, and snapped a few pictures of things that caught my eye. This cabinet was in his store and wasn’t for sale. The auctioneer told us that many of the items in the store had signs on them that said “Not for sale.”

I loved this planter, and started out bidding on it, but dropped out when it went over $50. I think it ended up going for $65.

This beautiful stained glass would have looked good in my bathroom, but it ended up going for $275.

I can’t remember how much this clock went for, but it was more than I wanted to pay!

I loved this silver tray and the silver trimmed sugar and creamer, but ended up leaving before these were auctioned off.

There were so many items to be auctioned that it took all day. I left for awhile and ended up going back right before it was over. I did ‘win’ a bid on a diamond cut glass ice bucket. It looks pretty in my china cabinet, and reminds me of all the trips to his antique shop. I also bought an oil painting which I’ll probably put in my booth.

There were lots of surprises in the auction-for example this piece of tin advertisement which is also a string holder went for $1,400! A little bit out of my price range. I later heard some antique dealers discussing this and saying that the piece was valued at around $9,000!

I did start out bidding on this Victorian bird cage, but dropped out when it went over $200. It ended up bringing over $500!

2nd Time Around: Painting a Vanity

A couple of weeks ago, I shared on 2nd Time Around some of the painted furniture that some of the vendors at the antique mall had painted. I wanted to try painting a piece, but was not sure of my ability to do a good job and sell the piece. I’ve painted furniture for myself, but when you are painting to sell you want it to be perfect.

So, one day I was at a local thrift store, and saw this cute little vanity. Sorry I don’t have before pictures, but I’ll do my best to describe it. The vanity was solid wood, pine, and had yellow flowers stenciled on it.

I chose black for my first project. I distressed the edges just a little with sand paper. I was not really pleased with the paint finish-I wanted it to be perfect- but decided to sell it as is. I took it to my booth, and had an offer on it the first day! I accepted her offer, and the piece has been sold!

So, now I’m going to have to look for another small piece to paint! LOL

2nd Time Around: Cricut Machine

You never really know what you’ll find at a garage sale or estate sale! I usually look for things I can sell in one of my booths, or in my Etsy shop, but one day recently I came across this little machine! I’ve heard other people talk about them and how much they enjoy using theirs, so I bought this one at a great price. I thought that if I didn’t like it, I could always sell it on Ebay or to one of my teacher friends.

Got it home, and it didn’t have any cartridges with it, so I put it on a shelf and forgot about it until the other day. My friend Karen has one, and has loaned me several of her cartridges!

I don’t know what I’ll end up making with it, but I would like to make some mats for picture frames, and maybe some cards for my flea market jewelry.

So, do any of you have a Cricut? Tell me what all you do with yours!! I need some inspiration!

At the Flea Market where I have one of my booths, we have lots of talented vendors! Lately, the rage has been to take old furniture not worth refinishing, and breathe new life into it with paint!

These photos are some of the new pieces that have been added this month: (sorry, I don’t have any before pictures, but trust me…these pieces were blah before! )

Sometimes the painted furniture sells within a few days, and other times it sits there awhile til just the right buyer comes along!

2nd Time Around: New Use for an Old Shelf

Have you ever bought something and wondered later “Why on earth did I buy that?'” Bet you have if you are a regular shopper of garage sales, flea markets etc. Recently I bought this shelf for $5.00 at a yard sale. I really don’t know what I was thinking when I bought it, but at the time it seemed like a good shelf for my cans of spray paint. Or maybe a shelf for paper back books at the flea market! Well, the spaces between the shelves turned out to be too close together for spray paint, and I really don’t have or sell enough paper back books to justify taking up space for them.

The shelf sat in my garage for nearly 2 months getting on everyone’s nerves until finally on Saturday while organizing the pantry I had a brainstorm!

The shelf is a perfect place to store canned goods! So, I used some light green paint from the paint stash and spruced it up. Now I can see at a glance what canned goods I have! If you look closely you can see that I have 3 cans of spaghetti sauce! No, I didn’t buy that many because they were on sale, I just didn’t realize I had that many because they kept getting pushed to the back of the shelf!

Anyway, I love the shelf in it’s new spot. It is not deep and had to have a brace put on it to secure it to the wall, but I’m happy with my new organized pantry! (At least the canned goods are organized!) LOL

2nd Time Around: Shopping in London!

Thank you for stopping by! I have been on an extended vacation to England, Scotland, and Ireland, and am finally beginning to recover from my trip!

While on the trip, I didn’t get to shop very many antique stores, but did go to one market in London and enjoyed browsing the vintage and antique items. I had to be careful about the weight of my purchases because I didn’t want my suitcase to weigh more than the 50 pound limit! So, even though I spotted lots of things that I loved, I purchased some pieces of vintage jewelry!

I fell for this goldtone daisy pendant and had to have it! It can be confusing because of the different value of the pound to the dollar-it seems like you are not paying much until you convert the currency!

This beautiful rhinestone bracelet was just begging to come home with me! The British lady that had this jewelry said both pieces came from the same estate, and were from the sixties! I have no idea if that was true, but it makes a good story!

2nd Time Around: New Flea Market Pictures

These pictures are from the 2nd Flea Market where I have a booth. The flea market has new owners, and they have worked to hard to upgrade and make it a wonderful place to shop. So, I’m going to show you some pictures of items that tempt me every time I go out there…these are not from my booth, but were taken with my camera by the owner’s son.

2nd Time Around: A Different Bird Feeder

Last week I mentioned that I would be traveling to Mentone, Al. and would probably visit the White Elephant antique store. Well, we never made it to the antique store. We did go to Mentone, and from there we ended up driving a few miles to a Collinsville, Al, a small community south of Mentone. Each Saturday they host an event called Trade Day. It is like a giant outdoor flea market. The brochure said that the event drew crowds of about 30,000 each week!

I did buy some jewelry for my flea market booth, and also found these bird feeders made of giant timber bamboo! I fell in love with them at first sight! The man that made them was selling them at great prices, and the more you bought the cheaper the price. He told us that people in the Philippines build homes out of this type of bamboo.

So, after buying several, I gave one to the hostess who invited us, am giving one to my daughter for her birthday, and will probably sell the others in my flea market booth.

This one was the one that I gave our hostess. Her home is right on the brow of the east side of Lookout mountain, and I think you can see what a fantastic view there is from her home!

2nd Time Around: White Elephant Antiques in Mentone, Alabama

We were out of town this past weekend, and will be next weekend, so I’m posting a picture of an antique shop that I’m looking forward to visiting!

It is the White Elephant in Mentone, Alabama on Lookout Mountain. I have a friend that has a home on the brow of the mountain, and at least once a year a whole group of good friends visit her and enjoy spending some girl time chatting, shopping, eating at local restaurants etc!

I’ve bought several things at this shop through the years, but have not visited since I’ve started my own flea market and antique booth adventure. So, I’m looking forward to noting displays, prices, etc. and really seeing what sells!

I don’t know why I took a picture of this teapot…guess it was the one thing that caught my eye…LOL I think my taste has changed since then.

2nd Time Around: Teapot set

It seems that the sales in our area have tapered off-not as many bargains are to be found lately. It could be the heat….we are having some really HOT and humid days here-they pretty well drain all your energy.

Last week on Friday I did find this cute little teapot complete with a sugar and creamer at a great price! It was made in Occupied Japan and there are no chips! It was very dirty when I dug it out of a box at the sale and since I didn’t make it to the sale until later, I’m surprised it was still there. I’m not sure where it will end up-could be in one of my booths, or possibly in my Etsy shop, but for now, I’m just enjoying

One thing for sure, you never know what you’ll find when out hunting!

2nd Time Around: A Birdhouse and Some Fond Memories

I mentioned in a couple of 2nd Time Around posts how much fun it was to travel along Highway 11/80 to the Antique Alley sales in May. But a couple of weeks before that I had a great time in Chunky, Ms. with a flea market friend attending about 30 community sales in a small area! I love it when communities and neighborhoods have these sales especially when I can go with a fun friend!

Often I get carried away and forget everything I bought. That happened with this birdhouse in the pictures below. I unloaded it and pretty much forgot about it until today! It was handmade with wood from an old barn by a man who had recently passed away. We stopped at his wife’s home, and she reluctantly sold it to me. She said she had lots more that he had made, and was not ready to sell them all yet. I didn’t know him of course, but his wife was so sweet and seemed to enjoy our visit when we stopped at her sale. I would like to think that it makes him happy to know that his bird house has a new home, and will be enjoyed for years!

It might not look like much to the average person, but I love it! It makes me smile when I remember how much fun it was to explore this small community by attending their yard sales!

I love birdhouses and don’t plan on putting this one in one of my booths!

2nd Time Around: Chair Planter

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about Antique Alley that runs along Highway 11 from Mississippi to Virginia. The starting point is not too far from my house, and one of my friends and I had a great time traveling about 40 miles to a couple of small towns along the route. I have always wanted a chair that could be used as a planter, and I found one! This chippy little chair was just begging to come home with me! It is filled with a pot of sale flowers from Lowe’s for this photo, but will soon have something a little more showy!

2nd Time Around: Designer Jewelry

Recently I bought a lot of jewelry from a lady here in town to resale in my antique mall booths and in my Etsy shop. I knew when I bought it that the jewelry was good…there were lots of Weiss pieces in the lot.

When I saw the bracelet and earrings in the pictures, I didn’t realize how special they were until I researched the designer. This set is by Elsa Schiaparelli, an Italian born designer who moved to Paris and became a rival of Coco Channel.

I recently listed this set in my Etsy shop, and was very pleasantly surprised when they sold this weekend!

2nd Time Around: Vintage Copper Pendant

This past weekend a yearly event called Antique Alley was held. Vendors from Mississippi all the way to Virginia set up along US highway 11 and sell antiques and vintage items. Of course I went since the whole thing starts pretty close to my home.

I bought lots of ‘stuff’, but have been too overwhelmed unpacking and organizing it to do much else! So I am going to show you another bargain piece of jewelry I found at a church garage sale along the route on Saturday. The church was close to my home, and when I saw it I stopped of course! I asked about jewelry, and a nice lady said you can have this whole box for $5.00. I took a peek inside, and saw that it was an assortment of costume jewelry including Anne Klein earrings, a sterling bracelet, etc.

After I got home I found among the jewlery this copper and enamel piece. When I first saw it, I didn’t realize it was anything special, but saw that it was signed ‘Matisse.’ I researched this jewelry and found it to be highly collectable and a little on the pricey side! This necklace has a flaw on one side, so I listed it on Etsy, took pictures of it, and described it including the flaw! It sold within a few minutes! So, I paid for my box of jewels, and made a little profit. I hope the lady that bought it can fix it….if not the flaw was on the back, and should not be too noticeable!

I’m really enjoying learning about vintage jewelry….and have found out that you never know what is in a box of jewelry!

2nd Time Around: A 25 Cent Surprise!

I love getting bargains, and most weeks I get several that I can use in my booths, or sell on Etsy. This past week, I almost didn’t go to the sales because of a storm that came through, but decided to get up anyway. Right before the storm came through, I stopped at a sale in a part of town I normally don’t go to. I was already in the neighborhood, and decided to go to this particular address because scrapbooking supplies were advertised.

I usually look for Vintage jewelry that I can sell on Etsy and in my booths. This young lady had several pieces on a table in zip lock bags for 25 cents each. I thought the one in the pictures below was pretty, and picked it up along with several others.

After I got home, I got out my jewelry loupe to take a closer look-and what do you know-this one was marked 14k from Israel! I took it to the jewelry store along with some other pieces to verify it and see how much it is worth, and the jeweler said that based on the price of gold, it was worth $150 just for the gold! Not only that, the pearls are real! So….guess what I am going to do? Keep it! LOL

2nd Time Around: Vintage Oil Paintings

A week or two ago, I blogged about oil paintings. That is one thing I’m always on the look out for at sales. Before my blogging days, I remember getting one for 10 cents at a sale, and selling it for 12 dollars when I first started my booth! Since that time, I’ve purchased several, and sold a few at one of the booths.

This one is 2nd Time Around for us because it came from my Mother in Law’s home. She knew the little lady that painted this magnolia (which happens to be our state flower) and proudly displayed it in her living room. When she moved to an assisted living facility, we took the painting and hung it in our home.

I’ve often wished I had the talent to paint!

2nd Time Around: Marble Top Furniture

I try to buy small pieces of furniture for my antique booth when I can get it at a good price-cheap enough to resale and make a little bit. One Saturday morning, I was the first person at a garage sale, and found this little marble top sideboard. I came really close to keeping it for my house, but decided to ‘try’ to sell it. It has been in the booth for a little over a week, and has been admired quite a bit, but had no offers.

I think I’ll give it a couple of months, then reduce the price a little! I know it will eventually sell cause it is just so pretty! I am really attracted to marble top furniture lately, and seems like others are too!

This is a great looking dresser that is part of a bedroom set. The bed, and two marble top dressers are beautiful –but very pricey!

I was at the same auction that this piece came from. It is lovely too-and priced about a hundred dollars more than my sideboard. I love it!

So, what kind of furniture are you drawn to these days? I used to love oak, and still do, but find myself attracted to lots of other styles now!

2nd Time Around: A Wooden Box

I ‘won’ this cute wooden box at the same auction that I blogged about a couple of weeks ago. I really love it, but like the hall tree, I think I paid too much for it, so it will stay with me! 2nd Time Around: Another 2nd thought purchase!

Have you ever seen something at an estate sale or garage sale, not bought it, then decided later you wanted it? That is what happened with this oil painting I bought this weekend. At first I thought the owner wanted too much, so I left her my number and asked her to call me if she had anything left over and was willing to take less for it. The next day she called, and I picked up a few bargains along with this pretty oil painting! She had more invested in the frame than I ended up paying, so I think I got a bargain-even though it was not cheap by garage sale prices! I haven’t got it hung yet…just propped up for the photo!

2nd Time Around: Auction Regrets!

I never have liked auctions too much…it is hard for me to sit all day and wait til something I like comes up for bid. Recently I went to one and got a little carried away! I have always wanted a hall tree, and when this one came up for bid, I managed to ‘win’ it! The only problem is that when I got home with the piece, I wasn’t sure at all that I liked it. So, I’m going to keep looking for one I like better! This one will probably end up in one of my booths, and I doubt very seriously that I’ll make much money on it if any! It is pretty in it’s own way, and the price was right, but it’s just not the one!

So, lesson learned for me-auctions are not my ‘cup of tea’! I would rather pay a little more and buy something from an antique store when I have time to really mull over the purchase. Auctions are too much pressure!

2nd Time Around: Art from Old Plates

This week I want to share with you a project that one of the vendors in one of the antique malls I am a part of completed. She searched for old antique and vintage plates, and glued them using Epoxy glue to a wooden board. She got the idea from an interior decorator who first saw this in an antique shop in New Orleans. I love the way her plate ‘art’ turned out! What a great way to use those one of a kind vintage and antique plates!

2nd Time Around: A Mistake???

I did a post a few weeks ago about pottery from Italy. Recently I saw this little chicken dish, and in my haste to buy it, I forgot to check it out for knicks, chips, etc.

When I got home, I realized I had made a mistake! Part of her tail had been broken off!

So, what do you do with a piece that is chipped and would not be good to put in the booth? Use it yourself! I decided to place the hen on my kitchen counter and hide the chipped end…don’t know what I’ll store in it, but I’ll think of something.

Have you bought something and found out it had a flaw when you got home? I try to check things out, but sometimes I miss things! Please tell me I’m not the only one!

2nd Time Around: Bargain Jewelry

One thing I’ve been reluctant to start at my antique booths is selling jewelry. Recently I had the opportunity to buy some jewelry from a fellow vendor who didn’t want to go to the trouble of the jewelry. Since then, I’ve been fascinated with vintage jewelry and have been trying to learn about it. One of the tips I was given was to always ask at a garage sale if they have jewelry. I did that recently and the lady dug this box out of the bottom of another huge box. It looks like junk, and mostly it was! But there was some cute pieces of jewelry that I put in my booth. The best part was the price. I asked her how much for the whole box since I didn’t really want to go through it piece by piece. And when she said 50 cents I grabbed the box and left! I could hardly wait til I got home to go through it! The box had about 30 pieces of jewelry with only 3 or 4 unwearable, so the pieces make great inexpensive items to add to my booth-or to keep!

And my bargain shopping paid off! Inside was this sterling silver bracelet! It is really pretty, and I haven’t decided yet if I will add it to my booth, put it on ETSY or keep it!

I don’t always get the great bargains….I paid a little more than I normally do for this sterling silver piece below at an estate sale….and I’m pretty sure I will sell it. The owner of one of the antique malls has offered to let me place them in her showcase. She said people often are looking for sterling silver bracelets!

2nd Time Around: Aggressive Garage Sale Shoppers!

This past weekend, we had beautiful sunny weather and along with that comes lots of garage sales! It seems like the first of the month is a popular weekend for sales, and there were plenty! Even though I’m buying lots for my booth, I still look for things to keep!

This canister is one of the items I bought this week that I think I’ll keep. Actually it was part of a set. You see, this other shopper grabbed up the other two as I picked up this one, even though I got there first and had just asked the lady how much for the set. My son was with me, and said “That’s part of the set, you’re not going to break it up are you?” And I told him, yes I am unless she lets me have the other two since I was trying to gather them up to pay for them. I know this sounds silly, but lesson learned, get your items quickly and put them together up near the checkout, you never know how aggressive the other shoppers will be! LOL

Anyway, I’m happy with this one red canister….I think it will be lovely at Christmas!

Later, at another sale, I ran into a lady that has a booth at one of the antique malls that I have my booth. She was leaving with a gorgeous tiger oak chair that I would love to have had! If I had been there just 5 minutes earlier, I would have bought it. Since then I noticed that she had the chair in her booth priced at $285! I have no idea what she paid for it-but I bet it was nowhere near that! Should be interesting to see if it sells quickly!

2nd Time Around: Mirrors

Last week I showed you some pictures from the new booth at the antique mall that my friends and I opened. I promised you this week that I would share with you which booth was mine! It was the first one! Lots of you had great guesses and comments, and I appreciate each and every one of you that participates in 2nd Time Around.

This week I would like to share with you two recent purchases-mirrors! Nothing makes a room glow more than a pretty mirror.

This oval beveled mirror was a recent find from an unique little shop in Tuscaloosa, Alabama called Ann’s Tiques. She is a retired educator like myself, and has put an older home she owns to great use-she has some antiques and vintage items of her own, and rents booths to some other vendors. I usually check her shop when in Tuscaloosa because she has such great prices. I got this pretty mirror for $25.00! I took the one that it replaced to one of the antique booths, and hopefully it will sell soon! I love the oval shape of this mirror.

The one in the picture below is made my at first booth I have with my son. We bought this mirror at an estate sale for a great price. It is not beveled, but has a beautiful frame. So far, no bites on it, but it does add some class and elegance to the booth!

2nd Time Around: Italian things

When I’m at estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores etc., I am always drawn to things from Italy.

Here are a few of my recent finds from Italy. This vase came from a resale shop. I sold it on Etsy just a few days after it was listed. Since I was new at selling, I found out that I had alot to learn! The vase arrived at it’s destination, but in two pieces! Needless to say, I have learned to be much more careful in my packaging! This vase was really unusual, and I hate that it got broken!

This hand painted vase from Italy is my favorite! I bought it from one of the dealers at the antique mall. He was closing his booth, and gave me a great deal on the vase! I love the bright vibrant colors.

And finally, this wooden inlaid box came from Italy. I bought it from an estate of a lady that had traveled the world over. I love this too, but still think my favorite if the hand painted pitcher above.

Snow in Mississippi

When it snows here, pretty much everything shuts down! Schools close, offices, etc. all close early. People down here don’t know how to drive in the snow, and often those that do slide off the road!

I love the snow, and think it is beautiful, but I’m so glad we don’t have to deal with it on a regular basis!

I’ve had to stay home today…so I’ve gotten lots done! Busy making crafts for my Etsy shop, and my flea market booth!

2nd Time Around: Cow Creamers

This picture is one of the cow creamers that I’ve found while shopping for my Etsy shop and antique booth. This one is a little large, but so cute! It is the size of a milk bottle. I usually buy cow creamers when I find them, because I’ve sold two on Etsy-in fact my first sale was a cow creamer!

Recently I passed up one at an estate sale like the one in this link:

It was priced at $12.00 and I thought that was too much! I wonder now if it was like the one in the link! Guess I’ll never know! LOL

Next time I run across one from Germany, I think I’ll take a chance on it. :)

I’m not really a football fan, but this year I really got into this game! Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for your hard work!

2nd Time Around: Milk Glass

One of the things I’m finding while hunting for stuff for my booth is lots of milk glass. Most of it is priced very reasonably, and lots of people like to collect it. Like everything else I’m buying these days, I love it, just don’t have the space for it in my home!

Here are some milk glass pieces that I’ve bought recently:

Love this 2 piece hen dish!

This vase has been one of my most viewed items on Etsy. I don’t know why….it just is!

Love this big urn like vase! I think it would be perfect in a craft room or studio to use for storing supplies!

This little bowl is pretty popular too…I have bought two of these…one for my booth, and one for ETSY.

2nd Time Around: Salt and Pepper Shakers

One of the things I’m finding at estate sales, etc. is salt and pepper shakers. I did a post a while back on my first antique mall booth, and showed some of the salt and pepper shakers I have bought.

I continue to look for them everywhere I go, because they usually don’t require much investment, and usually people like them! Those pictures from my booth can be viewed here. The booth is still going strong although it looks different. The china cabinet has been sold and lots of other stuff too! Maybe one day soon I will have pictures of the new booth to share.

My favorite salt and pepper shakers are these…I use them often. They were given to me by my daughter when she moved into her new home. These didn’t fit into her new decor…but they did mine! The pattern is Daisy Chain by Gail Pittman.

I couldn’t resist buying these little guys….they were made in Japan and so cute!

This retro pair of S and P shakers was sold this week on Etsy! I love the look and they are very functional too!

I have sold several sets of S and P shakers including two hugging geese, a set of pigs, and the hen with eggs in the mall link. I love to look for them, and wish I had enough space to collect them!

2nd Time Around :Vintage Tins

One of the things I’m noticing more and enjoying buying since I’ve started my booths and Etsy shop is vintage tins. I recently purchased this one, and listed it on Etsy. It is from 1979 and is a reproduction of a Nabisco tin from 1914. It sold rather quickly, and the young lady told me that she and her future hubby were buying these to use at their wedding reception! I am always amazed at the creativity of brides and always love to see what they do differently….this should be so cute! Wish I could see pics of how it turns out.

This one was an estate find, and so pretty! It was the only thing I’ve listed on Etsy that sold the same day I listed it!

This one is slightly damaged with a dent in the lid. But people seem to like it anyway! It is desigened by the Daher company and was made in England.

So…it seems that everywhere I go I’m seeing these vintage tins. I always have to pick them up and check the bottoms to see if there is a date, or a marking of some kind.

2nd Time Around: Teapots

I seems that I’m noticing teapots everywhere I go since I started my antique mall and Etsy adventures! This chippy yellow cabinet is not in my booth (I wish) but in a booth near mine at the new antique mall. I love the cabinet, and can’t think of a better way to decorate it than all these vintage teapots!

I only have one teapot at my house even though I love them….I bought this one several years ago at an auction. It came with another teapot and a couple of cups. I love it because it matches my china with the lavender flowers.

Here’s another one I found recently and listed on Etsy. I sold within a week and arrived at it’s destination on Christmas Eve! The lady that bought it emailed me not to worry about it arriving on time…she printed a picture and wrapped that!

It’s Complicated!

It is so cold here just like most of the rest of the nation! One thing I enjoy doing in cold weather besides browsing flea markets, etc is go to the movies. If you haven’t seen this one, and need a laugh give it a try! I love Meryl Streep and she does a great job in the movie.
